Poetic Shihua, the unique form of ancient Chinese poetical masterpiece contains poetry criticism, documentary miscellanea, and commentaries on poems; it implies important poetic theory. The creation, analyses and development of traditional Chinese poetry are largely affected by it.’Collection of poetic Shihua in the Republic period of China’is a set that includes traditional poetry and poetic theory in that period. The entire collection consists of six parts, embodying thirty-seven poetry literatures, which are very thoughtful and significant to that era. As a mature criterion,’Collection of poetic Shihua in the Republic period of China’has a deep influence on appreciation of ancient Chinese poetry, classical and modern poetry in the Republic period of China and other western poetry. It is also the basis of development of Chinese classical and modern poetry due to its all-embracing character. This paper researches poetic theory in this collection, attempting to illustrate the poetic theory comprehensively in order to explore the important significance to the modern poetry system. The paper is based on four parts:The first part is the theory of poetry essence, including’the voice of audiences’and’events’. This part is divided into two sections to explain two separate theories:Poetry is the voice of audiences and poetry is the refection of events. In the first section, the author mainly expresses how ’the voice of audiences’becomes poetry and illustrates why poetry can express people’s real soul. In the second section, the author mainly discusses how people’s aesthetic appreciation and the contents of poems are both derived from events. The second part is the theory of poetry creation, including’poets’ self-cultivation’ and ’rules’. The paper mainly discusses the poets’ self-cultivation and creation for the collection. The self-cultivation in spirit includes the relation between’quality of poets’and’quality of poetry’; while the self-cultivation in art includes the conception of’poetry is based on knowledge’. As for the’rule’part, the author describes poetry creation skills. The third part is the theory of poetry composition, including’life’, ’identity’and’behavior’. This part is divided into three explanatory sections:the first section is life of poetry that contains three elements: strength, mettle and verve. The identity of poetry includes ambition, motif and emotion. The behavior of poetry includes tone, sound and rhyme. Overall, these three sections are the basis of poems. Specifically, these nine elements are the basis of poems. The fourth part is the theory of poetry value, including’view of validity’,’view of invalidity’and poetry’s functional value. This part consists of two sections:the first section discusses the critics’attitudes towards poetry’s validity; the second section mainly discusses poetry’s functional value, illustrating two functions of the collection that are value of history and value of time.
