In TCFL, newspapers and periodicals reading course is not only anadvanced course for TCFL students, but also becomes attractive to otherlearners because of its abundant content and moderate level of difficulty. Sinceteaching materials as the guidance of teaching to certain extent determines thequality of teaching, the importance cannot be neglected. The writer foundthrough analysis of the papers on studies of teaching materials thatnewspapers and periodicals reading materials lack of specialties, i.e., thepublished newspapers and periodicals reading teaching materials are notdistinguishable in subject specialties.This paper analyzes the status of the newspapers and periodicals readingmaterials of TCFL. It takes “China on Newspaper–Chinese NewspaperReading Course” as study objective and analyzes the purpose, principle andcontent of the teaching material, and summaries the strengths and weaknessand provides suggestions to newspapers and periodicals reading materialscompilation.The paper comprises:Part One: Introduction. It mainly includes the background and purpose,the status quo and the scope and research method of the subject.Part Two: Analysis of “China on Newspaper”. It analyzes “China on Newspaper” from four perspectives: positioning, writing style, content andlayout design. The detailed study includes:1. Positioning. It confirms that the teaching material is suitable formoderate teaching period.2. Writing style. It mainly analyzes the structure of both the entiretextbook and the unit.3. Content. It’s the major study objective. First, the paper analyzes thepart of knowledge about newspaper in the teaching material, which issignificant difference in comparison with other newspaper readingteaching material. Second, it analyzes the part of newspaper newsreading.In the section of newspaper knowledge, it analyzes through the relevantknowledge about newspaper, vocabularies and exercise setting. In the sectionof newspaper news reading, it mainly analyzes through article evaluation,knowledge point and exercise setting.4. Layout design. It analyzes text layout, knowledge point presentationand the usage of visualization factors.Part Three: the conclusion and inspiration of the analysis of “China onNewspaper” teaching material. It discusses the strengths and weaknesses ofthe teaching material. The strengths are the systematic knowledge aboutnewspaper, the variety of text content, the clear clue of exercise design andnew layout design. The weaknesses are vocabularies arrangement lacks ofprogression and it lacks multi-media teaching materials as support.Part Four: Suggestions to improvement of wring and teaching of “China onNewspaper”. Two suggestions are given in the end in responding with theweakness of the teaching material: to focus on the periodical law of journals inarticle selection, and to add some knowledge about Chinese social andcultural common sense. Also, it gives two suggestion to the usage of theteaching material in teaching: the combination of primary and secondaryteaching materials and the application of multi-media teaching tools. Part Five: Conclusion. In summary,“China on Newspaper” is an excellentand innovative teaching material. It has the not only the strengths ofnewspapers and periodicals reading materials, but also creative improvementon top of that, and indicates an outstanding direction for writing newspapersand periodicals reading teaching materials. Its practice will provide new ideasfor compilation of newspapers periodicals reading teaching material.This paper is expected to provide some reference and suggestions tocompilation of newspapers periodicals reading teaching materials through itsstudy, so the materials can better meet the demand of teaching.
