Tourist text translating plays an important role in promoting the development oftourism which has developed vigorously in recent decades. However, there are a lot ofproblems in extant translated versions which have difficulties in attracting tourists. Astourist texts are special ones with informative function and vocative function translatorsshould follow some particular translating principles and adopt specific translatingtechniques. Based on differences between western and eastern culture, under theguidance of functional equivalence theory by Nida, Eugene A, I studied the differencesof language style, grammar and syntactical structure between English and Chinese, andput forward three principles translators should observe in tourist texts translating: thetranslated version should be smooth and natural, center on their readers, take spreadingforeign culture as its orientation. In accordance with the differences between Englishtourist texts and Chinese ones, their special function and translating principles, I believethe following translating techniques should be adopted in translating tourist texts, namely transliteration, paraphrase, amplification, omission, sequential-order andreverse-order. Through analysis, I believe functional equivalence theory has a guidingsignificance on translating English tourist texts into Chinese. Functional equivalencetheory helps translators shake off the shackle of form and content of the original text onthe basis of distinguishing differences in language and culture between English andChinese. Translators should pay close attention to the anticipated function of thetranslated version and adopt proper writing manners in line with the culture of targetlanguage so that the translated version can function as expected. The Functionalequivalence theory is conducive to enhancing translators’ ability in properly choosingand correctly applying translating techniques to improve the quality of tourist texttranslating and promote the practice of translating English tourist text into Chinese.
