Unconventional VO-type compound verb is a special class in modern Chinese vocabulary system. It belongs to the Verb-object compound from the perspective of grammatical structure. However, form the angle of deep semantic relations, name morpheme’s semantic role is neither regular on the VN structure-style justice directly to give the [+patient] nor Verb morpheme direct domination and relates, but to express the [+time],[+tool],[+result],[+agent] and so on, which reflects the complexity of verb-object relations. This paper argues the structural properties of Unconventional VO-type compound verb with multi-angle demonstrations, and describes the semantic type, and explains their Motivation and formation mechanism with the combination of quantitative and qualitative methods from the views of syntax, semantics, transform analysis, lexicalization, light verb shift and other modern linguistic theories. The main emphasis in this study is the semantic types and formation mechanism of Unconventional VO-type compound verb. Besides, it is the first time that the unconventional VO-type compound verb in the fifth edition of Contemporary Chinese Dictionary is thoroughly analyzed and the semantic type is elaborated according to the preposition of Dictionary Interpretation and the method of synonyms transformation, as well as the formation mechanism of VO-type compound verb on the syntactic level with the light verb shift theory, which shows the originality of this paper. The paper is divided into four chapters. The first chapter introduces the topic and the background of the paper, the source of the corpus, especially emphasizes the overall picture of the structural attributes of the VO-type compound verb, the semantic types of verb-object relations and unconventional Verb-object Motivation to illustrate the purpose of this study. The second chapter begins with specifying the range of Unconventional VO-type compound verb, pointing out the attribution predicament of the structure type, and then try to prove that the compound words can be mocked by phrase structure analysis method in modern Chinese vocabulary system from the pros and cons and transform analysis methods. Besides, that the Unconventional VO-type compound verb belongs to the verb-object type but not the moving-like style is also proved. Third chapter describes and analyzes the semantic types of Unconventional VO-type compound verb from the point of the dictionary definition of the preposition and the typical transform of semantic types. Then, Unconventional VO-type compound verb is divided into "verb+causes","verb+purpose","verb+result "," verb+location","verb+time ",’’verb+tools","verb+agent",’’verb+way" of eight semantic types. This part discusses the role of preposition in understanding the semantic relations of compound verbs, and holds that Preposition has a role in the identification of semantic relations.Chapter four explains the motivation of Unconventional VO-type compound verbs. First of all, from lexicalization point of view, the Unconventional VO-type compound verb comes from that phrase gradually solidified with the continuous development of ancient Chinese. Second, according to comparing and identifying the light verb and preposition, we hold that preposition has the same function as the light verb in triggering the core word shift. Such that, in modern Chinese vocabulary system there is a kind of verbs that the surface structure is verb-vocabulary but the deep semantics is not action and patient relationship. These kinds of verbs are defined as Unconventional VO-type compound verbs. The non-corresponding of syntax and semantics is a normal syntactic operation.
