The Comparison Of Vocabulary In Wuhan Dialect Between The Old And The Young

Basing on the investigation of the Wuhan dialect vocabulary, this paper examines the dynamic change of vocabulary, researches the vocabulary differences between the young and the old, and explores the characteristics and regularities of its evolution. In this paper, the "Wuhan dialect" only means the dialect used in Wuhan’s city center, not including the far city’s dialect.The main research methods include:the field survey method, vocabulary database method, historical comparison method, and cultural connotation analysis.The main text is divided into three parts. The first chapter sorts the language material, and summarizes the correspondence and language environment of Wuhan dialect vocabularies in the young and the old. The second chapter carefully analyzes the language material, and concludes the type and source of the vocabulary differences between the young and the old. The third chapter focuses on the reasons that form the vocabulary differences between the young and the old. Through the analysis, the author thinks that:1. The change of Wuhan dialect vocabulary is a process that slow but continuous, is a result of inherit and change. The vocabulary of the young is a selective inheritance to the vocabulary of the old. It’s also an open communication to the external vocabulary.2. The sources of vocabulary differences between the young and the old include: mandarin vocabulary, popular words, other dialects, old words used as new idea. The mandarin vocabulary is the main source. The causes of the differences include:social change, language planning, cultural exchange, age difference, etc.3. Along with the growth of age and experience, the young may use some old words to their qualifications, but will still be affected by mandarin and other external vocabulary. In constant selective inheritance and absorption, Wuhan dialect vocabulary will show the colorful appearance.Doing the research in differences between Wuhan dialect vocabularies of the young and the old, can create important values in the dialect research, language contrast, study of folk culture, and social survey. These will be better for us to reveal the characteristics of Wuhan dialect, save dialect material, study the direction of the dialect development, and provide basis in future research about the Wuhan dialect of this time. This would not only help to better understand the characteristics of Wuhan dialect vocabulary, but also very helpful for other Chinese comparative study of dialect vocabulary. Analyzing the differences of Wuhan dialect vocabulary in the old and the young, can also explore its cultural roots, help to explore the historical and cultural reasons it exists, and summarize the regularity of language change.
