Watercolor is a type of painting with independent meaning. It reveals an exclusivevisual fascination for the full utilization of the medium characteristic. As the materialfoundation, medium will influence the effect of the "mark" and "image" in the paintingdirectly. Therefore, it is possible to study the "mark" and "image" of the watercolorfrom the perspective of its medium.This paper discusses and defines the original meaning and concep of the "mark"and "image" in the painting firstly, and then it illustrates the relationship of "center" and"mark","image"and "meaning" under the Chinese traditional art theory. Meanwhile, itcan intensify the recognition for the relationship through the specific practices by theeast or the west painting schools. In the second chapter,with its own languagecharacteristic of the watercolor, this paper discusses the two factors of the "mark" and"image" that can distinguish with the other kind of paintings and how to utilize the the"mark" and "image" to express the emotion and feelings of the artists. Also, it addressesthe specific philosophy connotation of the water in the Chinese culture. At last, on thebasis of the certain cognition of the watercolor’s "mark" and "image", contemporarywatercolor condition in China, it analyses the "mark" and "image" two basic visualelements which has some influences on the contemporary watercolor and developmenttrend to get a new studying perspective and provide a reference for the practice.
