Culture-Loaded words are words and expressions with rich culture connotations which represent a country’s civilization. Due to the uniqueness of the culture-loaded words, the translation of them has always been a difficulty in translation practice. The successful translation of culture-loaded words can make the target readers experience the authentic source culture and achieve a success cross-culture translation, and vice versa. Pragmatic translation applies theories of Pragmatics to translation practice, and advocates translators should transfer not only the implied meanings but the social and cultural meanings of the source language to target readers. This thesis studies the translation of culture-loaded words in Fu Sheng Liu Ji from the angle of pragmatic translation. It divides the culture-loaded words into six categories, namely ecological culture-loaded words, material culture-loaded words, social culture-loaded words, religious culture loaded words, linguistic culture-loaded words and literature culture-loaded words. It analyzes and summarizes the major translation methods applied to each category of culture-loaded words in the light of pragmalinguistic equivalence and sociolinguistic equivalence. This thesis attempts to find a better way to the learning and translation of culture-loaded words by adopting pragmatic measures.
