Marguerite Duras is a famous contemporary French women novelist, dramatist and director. In her novels there are so many excellent descriptions about the East and China. Based on Duras’three autobiographical novels:Un Barrage Contre le Pacifique, L’Amant, L’Amant de la Chine du nord, this paper will analyze the transmutation of the image of lovers and then try to explain the reasons for the transmutation. There are five parts in the paper:In the introduction, I will first introduce Duras to the readers, and then generalize the researches for Duras in China and abroad briefly. At last I will elaborate the significances and innovations of this paper. In chapter one, based on the text reading of the three novels of Duras, I will explain the appearance and transmutation of the image of lovers in her novels. In chapter two, I will elucidate the reasons for the appearance of the image of lover in1950s. I will explain them from three respects:the first is the evolutions of western European images of China; the second is experiences of Duras when she returned to France after she had been an adult; the third is the comparisons between Duras and Andre Malraux. In chapter three, I will analyze why the image of lovers in Duras’novels has changed so much. I sum up two main reasons that are objective reasons and subjective reasons. In the last part, I will summarize the paper wholly.
