This research takes the1950New-Year-painting Event in Shanghai as a starting point, intending to present a multi-directionally interactive view by studying different groups involved in the new New Year painting cause in Shanghai from1949to1953. This research is conducted through specific experiences of four groups relevant with the new New Year paintings:the creators, publishers, organizers and spectators. Firstly, the origin of the new New Year painting cause, an introduction to the New-Year-painting Event, questions proposed through the event and the research status quo of new New Year paintings are introduced. After that, by concentrating on the conflicts in capacity, thinking and economy encountered by the old calendar artists and the traditional Chinese painting artists in Shanghai during their participation in the new New Year painting cause, a comparison is made between them and the creating background of the new art workers. At the meantime of revealing differences brought by policies to various creators, influences brought by different creators on the work are also unraveled. Then, an investigation is made concerning the publishing, issuing and sales of the new New Year paintings, so that the struggles of participants in face of different interests are reflected. Publishers participated in the manufacturing and issuing of new New Year paintings out of political demands; they also continued to issue the old New Year paintings for profits. Organizers disposed the old New Year paintings for the interest of the new ones, but also loosed restrictions on themes, types and other indicators for new New Year paintings as a reaction to market demands. After that, leaping out of the circle of the creating, publishing and marketing of New-Year paintings, this research inspects the effect of the new New Year painting cause from the feelings of organizers and common people. At the end of the whole observation, relationships between the causes of the New-Year-painting Event, which can be treated as a mere nothingness, and the different situations of each participant are analyzed. Conflicts between old and new, their co-existence and continuation are revealed from a wider horizon.
