Objective:1. To investigate the psychological status of the poor students of a medical college, and to make a statistical description and analysis.2. Discuss the major risk factors and protective factors of mental health of the poor students in medical college.3. Evaluate the effect of psychological intervention of the poor students.Method:The students were collected from First to Fourth grade of A and C Undergraduate of a medical schools in Hunan Province.The Personal Questionnaire, the Chinese version of Eysenck Personality Questionnaire Short Scale, the social support scale and a list of90symptoms cluster were performed to Cluster sampling and cross-sectional survey study. Reinvestigation the poor students after Psychological intervention. To analyze the data statistical description, t-test, variance analysis, S-N-K variance analysis, Welch test, logistic regression analysis and Pearson correlation analysis were applied.Results:1. The score of Spiritual quality, Outward, Neurotic and Conceal less than the norm.There was Statistically significant difference between N-Neurotic and Norm(p=0.004);the score of Objective support lower than non-poor students. The total score of subjective support, support availability and social support higher than non-poor students.There was Statistically significant difference,that the total score of subjective support and social support compared to non-poor students (subjective support p=0.045,total score of Social support p=0.000).In addition to the SCL-90-negative number of items, the SCL-90scores was greater than or equal to the national Norm. There was statistically significant between the score of Obsessive-compulsive, anxiety, terror,psychosis and the national norm.2. In the study of influencing factors,we discovered that score girls higher than boys, students of A Undergraduate higher than C, Second grade higher than the other grade, medical test higher than other professional, non-only-child higher than Only child,tudents from rural higher than from the towns and cities.The score of students,that Choose to study medicine because of some friend persuasion,higher than other sources (score as high as199.2±90.37).There was statistically significant between the total score of grades, professions, professional satisfaction and the SCL-90(p<0.05).Grade, professional and home address were the factors of the SCL-90total score.3. There was negative correlation between neurotic, mental quality and social support, positive correlation between outward,conceal and social support. There was negative correlation between neurotic, mental quality and the factors of the SCL-90, negative correlation between outward, conceal,social support and the factors of SCL-90.4. The score after psychological intervention of spiritual quality, outward, neurotic and conceal was lower than before intervention.There was statistically significant difference of outward compared to neurotic. In addition to the negative items, the scores of other items of SCL-90were decreased. In addition to the comparison of before and after intervention of SCL-90positive symptoms, there were statistically significant of others.Conclusion:1. The mental health status of the poor students of the medical schools was in the middle level. Eysenck Personality Neurotic score lower than the Norm, the total score of Social support, subjective support and God will support higher than non-poor students. Obsessive-compulsive, anxiety, terror, mental illness of SCL-90were higher than the Norm, there was statistically significant.2. The influencing factors of mental health factors included grade, specialty and home adress of poor students in the medical college.There was Negative correlation between neurotic, mental quality and social support, positive correlation between outward, conceal and social support, there was Negative correlation between neurotic, mental quality and the factors of the SCL-90, negative correlation between outward, conceal, social support and the factors of SCL-90.3. Psychological intervention can improve personal construction and the mental health of the poor students.
