This thesis is under the background of the research on oil nationalization, which became the significant research project of domestic art theorists in the early period of20th century. However, we should realize that although some painters have insisted on integrating the characteristics of paintings in China and western countries, it still failed to reach the historic height of reform of modern landscape painting academically. We have to admit that it is necessary to learn from western countries completely and even imitate them, for oil painting is a kind of new foreign art in China. While we should also realize that we would finally find ourselves in a blind alley if we followed them blindly. Since the long historical development, the various schools of oil painting in western countries cannot be surmounted like the high mountains cannot be overstepped. Actually, different or foreign cultures will be accepted after the process of change and development. When they enter into a new country with different cultures and realistic environment, their form will be influenced and enriched by the strong national aesthetic psychology, sense and taste. The aesthetic value orientation and artistic pursuit consistent with the new form will appear and the distinguishing national feature will be established. This thesis aims to do a theoretical analysis of introducing the artistic spirit of Chinese painting to Chinese landscape oil painting.As a dependent branch in painting, landscape painting occupies a significant position in both eastern and western art during the historical development of painting. Both the Chinese landscape painting and western landscape oil painting exist initially as the accessory or background of the whole and generally evolve into a dependent branch after the longtime development.Chinese oil painting originates in western countries. At first, we Chinese only adopt the art of oil painting without changing, such as study the skill and the materials, learn the usage of perspective, color and composition. While at present, as the economy and culture develop rapidly and under the background of the integration of Chinese and western art, our landscape oil painting starts to pursue its own artistic spirit and artistic conception and attach great importance to expressing its own emotion. As an important category in the history of Chinese aesthetic history, artist spirit brings great influence to various types of art, especially to the field of painting. At present, the spirit of Chinese landscape painting has been applied to landscape oil painting by many Chinese painters, bringing spirit connotation and artistic conception to the work, which in result the landscape oil painting has the new root with Chinese Characteristics. Therefore, it is necessary to demonstrate the artistic spirit of Chinese landscape oil painting though studying the development of landscape oil painting in China.This thesis consists of five parts. The first part is chapter one in which the author summarizes the importance of artistic spirit in landscape painting by expounding the philosophical sense of artistic spirit and form and significance of artistic spirit in Chinese paintings, especially in landscape paintings.The second part is chapter two in which the key point of this thesis, the artistic spirit of landscape oil painting, is introduced after the importance of artistic spirit being summarized in chapter one. In this chapter, the author introduces and analyzes the development of the western landscape oil painting as well as the usage of artistic spirit in Chinese landscape oil painting from early times to now briefly. The third part is chapter three which aims to put forward the mistakes to be avoided and good points to be learned by illustrating and expounding the five forms of artistic spirit in landscape oil painting, such as art symbol, color control, painting technique control, linking of artistic spirit and usage of artistic conception.The fourth part is chapter four in which the author demonstrates the application and significance of artistic spirit clearly by studying several representative painters of Chinese landscape painting.The last part is conclusion in which the author puts forward suggestions and conclusion to artistic spirit in Chinese landscape oil painting.
