Translation is a creative linguistic activity. With the aids of other translation techniques we can bring forth the equivalent version of the source language, one of which is amplification. As newspaper materials have precise and concise diction, logical and systematical structure, short and condense sentences and words with new meanings, the author finds that amplification makes the target language easier for readers to comprehend and digest. Accordingly, an in-depth study of translation strategies is of great help to the promotion of English majors’ qualifications in translation. Amplification is a common translation method, ensuring that the target language delivers the meaning and style of the source language faithfully, which conforms to idiomaticity. The purpose of using this method is to keep its translation as much fluent and accurate as possible.According to the research, the author finds it feasible and applicable to use amplification in the translation in English newspapers. Based on amounts of translation practice and others’literature and researches, the author analyses and summarizes amplification and tries to discuss how to use the technique in aspects of adding the omitted parts as well as the parts required by semantics and rhetoric after the characteristics of news language are discussed. Meanwhile the author puts forward the requirements and expectations for a qualified translator, pointing that the translator needs to improve his professionalism, and develops a keen observation, persisting in the exploring the secrets of English newspaper translation.
