This report is based on the translation of the first chapter of the book The Rise of Early Modern Science: Islam,China and the West(second edition),which includes seven sections: the Modernity of Science,Science as a Civilizational Institution,Elements of the Sociological Perspective, the Role of the Scientist, the Ethos of Science,Paradigms and Scientific Communities and Conclusions. As a text on humanities and social science, the book is professional and objective,so the task of primary importance for the translator is to correctly understand the source text and produce professional and natural target text. This report is composed of four chapters.Chapter One introduces the research object and research significance.Chapter Two briefly describes the translating process, including pre-translating preparation, translating and proof-reading.Chapter Three expounds on the application of amplification and inversion during translation practice. In terms of amplification,to clearly express the meanings of the author and facilitate the understanding of the reader, the implication of some words or sentences by the original author should be explained by supplementing the omitted contents, thus making the implicit logical relations explicit. In terms of inversion, due to the differences between English and Chinese languages, the inversions of modifiers, parentheses, compound sentences, passive voice and negative sentences are necessary to make the translations fluent, natural and acceptable by the target readers. The last chapter summarizes the translator's understanding of and reflection on this translation practice. |
