Domestication And Foreignization

Domestication and foreignization, each of which serves as a guide to translation,have been proved to be the two effective translation strategies. Although quite anumber of scholars have conducted researches on the feasibility of these twotranslation strategies, yet there are few case studies which are exclusively devoted toexploration of their effectiveness when they are applied to translation ofculture-loaded expressions. As culture-loaded expressions carry much culturalinformation and display obvious cultural differences, and as domestication andforeignization are employed to cope with linguistic and cultural differences, this studyis an essential and typical one, and it is of notable practical value.First, this thesis briefly discusses the relationship among language, culture andtranslation, explores the definition and classification of culture-loaded expressionsand states the significance and structure of this study. Next, the thesis surveys the twotranslation strategies by expounding their definition and theoretical basis, as well asthe factors that influence the translator’s selection of the two strategies, before hereviews relevant current studies. What follows is the most important part: from theperspective of the two translation strategies, the author observes and explores howculture-loaded words are coped with in Selected Modern Chinese Essays translated byZhang Peiji. Meanwhile, the author conducts a quantitative analysis of how frequentlythe two strategies are employed in translating culture-loaded expressions. In order tofurther illustrate the feasibility of the two translation strategies, the writer makes aqualitative analysis of some good and poor examples.Finally, the author concludes that while translating culture-loaded expressions, itis quite necessary and practicable for the translator to apply the strategy offoreignization more frequently than that of domestication and flexibly employ the twostrategies simultaneously, which contributes to dissemination of Chinese culture.
