As the oldest way of making food, grilling enjoys a long history from the ancient times. It not only stands for a cooking style and delicious food, but also evolves into a leisure activity with unique features. Leisure grilling originated from America. However, with the development of China’s economy, Chinese people’s leisure life plays an increasingly large role and becomes more diversified. Hence, leisure grilling gradually emerges into Chinese people’s lives. Integrating these features such as delicious food, leisure, communication, interaction and popularity, it becomes very popular, especially among the youngsters and middle-aged people.Due to the different external factors like environment and consumers from those of the Western countries, leisure grilling is localized in China and becomes urban leisure grilling, which is different from the courtyard grilling and outdoor grilling in the West. At present, it is mainly categorized into two kinds:urban open air public grilling and indoor grilling. It is inevitable that many conflicts and issues arise out of the relationship between the external environment and the urban leisure grilling as the latter has a vey short history. However, these issues have not yet been properly solved because there is a severe lack of understanding of the target consumers in terms of existing products and services in China. Therefore, this project aims to study the product design of urban leisure grilling under the guidance of the Design Affairology Theory.Chapter one presents the background, purposes, significance of and the analytical approaches adopted in this thesis. Chapter two discusses the Design Affairology Theory so as to provide a general theoretical framework for the study. Chapter three generalizes the history of grilling from the ancient times till nowadays and then the evolution and status quo of leisure grilling in China. Urban leisure grilling is defined as the subject of this study. This chapter finally analyzes the internal factors regarding the products of urban leisure grilling. Chapter four investigates people’s urban leisure grilling activities. With facts, this chapter then elaborates on the external factors regarding the products of urban leisure grilling. At the end of this chapter, the design goal and principles of urban leisure grilling are formulated, and the design model is proposed. Chapter Five puts the conclusion of the study into practice and tests its validity through design practice.
