English-Chinese Attributive Translation Studies With Reference To Modern Language Study

The research focuses on the translation of attributives from English into Chinese. As one of the important grammatical components in both languages, there are many differences of attributive between English and Chinese. Attributive translation from English into Chinese is absolutely not an isolating phenomenon, but is closely related with other dimensions of languages. Therefore, a macroscopic contrast between English and Chinese is the starting point of our attributive translation explorations.This thesis analyzes the differences between English and Chinese from the aspects of organizing characteristics, sentence structures and attributive positions, and points out the influences of these differences on the problem of attributive translation. Then it summarizes traditional methods commonly used for the translation of attributive from English into Chinese from the angle of grammar:the method of preposition, the method of postposition and the method of fusion. This thesis uses examples to show that traditional translation methods can not solve all the problems we face in practical translation.In order to do further study on traditional translation methods, this thesis replenishes the translation methods from the angle of semantics and pragmatics. Then it discusses the problem of arranging attributive when translating attributives from English into Chinese. At last the author carefully analyzes the phenomenon of attributive movement and gives his own ideas to it.This thesis uses modern linguistic translation theories as the guiding principle for the further study into the problem of translating attributives from English into Chinese and the phenomenon of attributive movement. It gives reasonable answers to the complex problems appearing in the process of translation.
