Dissonance In The Controversy On"Revolutionary Literature" In20Th Century China

Hu Qiuyuan is famous as literary theorist, critic and historian because of his great success in literary theory, philosophy and history and significant influence to the development of contemporary Chinese history of literature. In early period, regarding himself as "Liberal Marxist", He made great contribution to the research on Plekhanov, the father of Russian Marxism and translation on literary theorists, such as Fritsch. In1930s, through the controversy about "the Third men", he was defending his own viewpoint to the relation between literature and politic, differing from ’"literature liberty" in left-wing literature.Since1949, Hu Qiuyuan is outstanding to national unity and territorial integrity on account of energetical promotion to the Cross-Strait Peaceful Reunification.Development of vulgar sociology theory in China and its criticism by Hu Qiuyuan is analysed and historical and realistic meaning of his standpoint is deeply explored in this paper.Firstly, the origin of vulgar sociology theory and its spread in China is introduced. From ancient literary thought to the modern ideological enlightenment and new vernacular literature in the May4th Movemen, the vulgarization of literary thought gave fertile soil to the vulgar sociology theory.Secondly, the Hu Qiuyuan’s research and criticism to "the sociology of literature" written by Fritsch is discussed, which is based on "mesomeric theory" proposed by Plekhanov.Thirdly, the Hu Qiuyuan’s critcism to the vulgar sociology tendency in Leftist Association and nationality artist of Kuomintang is discussed in two points of view, where the controversy about "the Third men" made vital effect on the circle of literature and art in1930s.Fourthly, the artistic value of Hu Qiuyuan’s critcism to the vulgar sociology theory is exposited in two ways. On one hand, the realistic meaning is proved from artistic value and aesthetic value of art production in1930s. On the other hand, limitations of Hu Qiuyuan’s thought is recognized and analysed from his critical thinking.At last, the modern significance of the critcism by Hu Qiuyuan is proposed through unscrambling the policy of literary theory since1949and the extreme literary theory in Culture Revolution.The vulgar sociology theory criticism by Hu Qiuyuan is limilted but advantageous and affirmative to the remediation to vulgarization and utility tendency of literary thought.
