With the further communication between China and Japan, more and more Japan people decide to pay China a sightseeing trip. Under such circumstances, more and more tourist interpreters are needed. Those interpreters play the role of a mediator between Chinese and Japanese culture as well as a service provider, which requires high quality of interpretation. On the other hand, Japanese and Chinese belong to different language systems, and there are differences between Japanese and Chinese in language structure, behavior modes, and cultural values, etc. So interpretation between Japanese and Chinese is of great research significance.Interpretation is context-sensitive. Tourist interpretation needs to adapt to the context, on the one hand, and on the other hand, make good use of the context, and sometimes even try to create a context in order to interpret correctly and idiomatically. Adaptation to the context means that tourist interpretation should take into consideration all the factors that involve cultural transformation and human interaction, and break free from the shackle of language form. The thesis makes a theoretical study on the strategies of tourist interpretation in the light of the context theory. To be specific, it discusses how to adopt the appropriate strategy according to the current context; how to interpret and behave appropriately so as to shorten the psychological distance between the tourists and the interpreters, and to introduce proper information to Japanese tourists. The research is more of an empirical study than a theoretical exploration, with a lot of first hand examples. Although this study is rather preliminary, the author hopes that more researches will be done on the basis of this one.The thesis is divided into six chapters. The first chapter introduces the research background, the significance of the research, research methods and purposes. The second chapter is about the theoretical background of the research. It explains the terms and relevant theories, including equivalence translation theory. Skopos theory and Functional Translation Theory. In this part. the difference between tourist interpretation and other types of interpretation is discussed. Thus, the essence and standards of tourist interpretation are defined. Chapter3discusses the use of different interpretation strategies adopted by interpreters according to the linguistic context, situational context and the cultural context with rich examples. Chapter4is a conclusion, summarizing the research results and pointing out the shortcomings of the research and prospects of the further research.
