Qin Zhaoyang was the famous editor, author and literary critic of the Chinese contemporary literature. He had amount of works including the controversial essay Realism-a broad road and editing the major literature journals People’s Literature and Dangdai Literary. The previous research on him usually focused on a certain identity of him such as what he did as an editor or a critic or an author. In fact, being author, editor, critic, party member and the instructor of literature brought him not only honor and success but also contradiction and entanglement.This article bases on discussing Qin’s literature woks, editing activities and critics, while focusing on his movement and persistence with contradiction and entanglement that the multiple identity caused. There are three parts:Part one discourses his effort and sacrifice while making choices between evolution and literature. Part two discourses Qin’s literature woks, editing activities and critics in50s in20th century. As swinging between politics and literature, he had to keep on changing identity frequently, which confusing him a lot because he must discover a new way of literature at that time. With frustration and blind obedience he tried to find the balance between politics and literature and art as same as the other intellectuals. Part three discourses his editing activities as being the chief editor of Dangdai Literary. At this period he made profound and lasting influence on Dangdai Literary. But he was no longer the guide of literature. As a result, his editing ideas became politically conservative in changing reality. At last he turned to be the interrupter of literature research instead of the promoters.It is by researching through the historical data and texts that this article uses to revert one’s vulnerable situation in sophisticated history and the embarrassments one meets at era of conversion. Analyzing contradiction and entanglement that the multiple identity brought to Qin Zhaoyang, we can learn more about Qin Zhaoyang and the intellectuals at his time.
