Comprehensive Chinese is the main course of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, the main purpose of this course is to training the ability of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Textbook is the evidence that the students and teachers should abide by, which represents the two fundamental sides of teaching Chinese to foreigners:What to teach and how to teach. Therefore, it is absolutely significant to study the compiling of the textbook of teaching Chinese to foreigners."A Course in Chinese" as one of the most influential textbooks is the most integrated textbook of primary stage of Chinese learning."Boya Chinese", edit by Li Xiaoqi, Peking University, is used wildly in Confucius Institute."Road to Success" is the latest integrated textbook which is published by Beijing Language and Culture University Press. These textbooks are used widely nowadays, so far, the thesis author hasn’t found any articles concerning about the comparative study of the three. However, it can’t deny that the study on them is significant for us to compile the ideal textbook. This thesis focuses on the comparative and exhaustive study of the various aspects concerning contents of text, new words, grammar, etc., in these three textbooks respectively. Questionnaires are also designed to get the first-hand material of students’comments towards the three textbooks. Based on the research carried out in this thesis, experiences as well as lessons can be drawn to provide reference for latter compliers so as to promote the development of the course of Chinese teaching for foreigners.In terms of contents, this essay did a comparative study on the length, themes and types of textbooks."Boya Chinese" is more regular in the set of text length. It has appropriate arrangement on long text and short text. Moreover, it follows the learning characteristic of progressive learning. While "A Course in Chinese" was more free in the set of text length and lack of consistency. Regarding the themes, the number of themes of "BOYA Chinese" and "Road to Success" is more than "A Course in Chinese" has, and adds some hot topics in the content. All of these three books have their own characteristics on types but most of texts are narration.In the set of vocabulary, this essay did a comparative study on the number of words and notes. In terms of the number of words,"Road to Success" has the largest number of new words. However, because it also has the largest number of texts, it doesn’t occupy the largest number of average amount of new words in each lesson. While "A Course in Chinese" has less new words number than "Road to Success", it also has less texts, so it has the largest number of average amount of new words in each lesson. In that case, students are harder to remember the new words."Boya Chinese" has the least number of new words and has reasonable arrangement of new words in each lesson. In terms of notes,"Boya Chinese" uses ways of Chinese characters, phrases, example sentences and illustration for notes. While "A Course in Chinese" and "Road to Success" mainly used Chinese and English for notes.In terms of grammar, this essay did a comparative study on the number of grammars and notes. The number of separation of meanings of each grammar in "A Course in Chinese" is less than that in "Road to Success", while "Boya Chinese" is more regular in the set of this. In terms of notes,"A Course in Chinese" and "Road to Success" use two languages for notes:Chinese and English,"Boya Chinese" only use Chinese. There are lots of exercises following each grammar in "Boya Chinese".In terms of exercise, this essay did a comparative study on the number of exercise and question types."Boya Chinese" has the largest number of exercise and the question types. Question types in "A Course in Chinese" and "Road to Success" is relatively fixed, all kinds of questions are shown in each lesson. There are lots of different question types in "Boya Chinese", different lessons has different question types.In conclusion, as three main integrated textbooks for teaching Chinese to foreigners,"A Course in Chinese","Boya Chinese" and "Road to Success" share the same outline, while to be specific, there exist great difference between them in contents of texts, new words, grammatical points, text exercises, etc. Generally speaking, compare with "A Course in Chinese" and "Road to Success","Boya Chinese" is more optimizing and scientific and has better quality. Therefore it has been more popular and widely accepted by the students, although it can’t be recommended as the perfect epoch-making textbook. To compile the new and ideal textbook for teaching Chinese to foreigner, we still have a long way to go.
