Chinese language is currently an important medium for international communication. Accordingly, study on improving Chinese teaching methods is needed to improve Chinese teaching in Mongolia. A questionnaire survey about Mongolian students’ Chinese learning shows that there are many problems in the learning process although the students have great zeal. When it comes to Chinese learning, Mongolian students are obviously doing much better in reading and writing than in listening, which has much to do with the Chinese teaching method. Understanding is the key to learning any language, because only by understanding well can people communicate with each other. Chinese listening course is relatively difficult for the Mongolian students. The teaching approach in listening classes is not very diverse, which is mostly based on audio playing while the importance of applying videos into teaching is overlooked. Thus the improvement and the innovation of the teaching methods should be carried out in Chinese listening classes. Videos are expected to be introduced in order that the supplementary role of vision on hearing can be better played. Therefore, the audiovisual teaching in Chinese listening classes can significantly improve the listening ability of students.Audio-visual teaching is an approach combined "watching" with "listening". In Chinese audio-visual lessons, the teacher organizes students to watch videos, explains and analyzes the relevant language points in the video materials, and instructs them to practice listening and speaking. In this way, students’listening abilities can be developed and their Chinese cultural awareness can be enhanced.Taking intermediate-level Chinese learners in Mongolia as study objects, this thesis focuses on the current situation of listening teaching in Mongolia, providing an overview of studies on listening teaching in China, on audio-visual teaching method both at home and abroad, as well as on listening teaching achievements in Mongolia. Suitable teaching modes and specific teaching means are designed according to the characteristics of Mongolian students. The thesis aims to provide Chinese listening teaching in Mongolia with some practical experience and references. There are altogether five parts in this thesis. Chapter One is a detailed description of the background and significance of the study. It covers a general introduction to the current teaching situations in Both China and Mongolia, the research subjects and methods, as well as the key points and difficulties of the research. Chapter Two illustrates the theoretical principles of audio-visual method and the studies on related practice teaching. The following chapter offers an analysis of the questionnaire on Chinese learners with intermediate level at Mongolian University, illustrating the objective, subject, content and method of the survey. Based on the analysis result, the fourth chapter deals with the curriculum arrangement and teaching approaches. The last part of the thesis presents a conclusion, summarizing the study and pointing out the new insights, innovative ideas, limitations of the study as well as the next research direction.
