This report is based on the translation of Mistress Pat by the famous writer Lucy Maud Montgomery, by focusing on the applicability of Semantic Translation (ST) and Communicative Translation (CT) Theories in literary work. Within the theoretical framework of ST and CT Theories put forward by Peter Newmark, this report summarizes and analyzes some of the difficulties in the translating process from sub-sentential level to supra-sentential level, including the translation of proper nouns, metaphors, tone, and phrases. The author attempts to reproduce the original in the translation by adopting various translation techniques, so that the target readers of the translated text can comprehend and appreciate the novel as similar as those readers of the original do. It has been found that ST and CT Theories can be well applied to the translation of English novels, and that idiomatic and fluent translation version can be rendered only through flexible application and combination of both Semantic and Communicative Translation.
