A Report On The Translation Of A Weekend To Remember And Something For Nothing

This is a translation project report on two short stories A Weekend to Remember and Something for Nothing, which have been chosen from the British writer Jeffery Archer’s short story collection To Cut a Long Story Short. A Weekend to Remember tells us a romantic but strange love story. After spending a fantastic weekend with a man in Paris, the intoxicating woman did not contact him any more until six years later, when they spent another weekend in the same place again. Something for Nothing tells us a breathtaking story of a man, who wanted to get some money without paying anything, but finally found himself in a scam and did not know how to get rid of it. The story line is full of ups and downs, the characters are described vividly, the psychological description is delicate, and both stories have an unexpected ending, which leaves the reader infinite suspense and imaginary space.This report is divided into four parts:Chapter One is a description of the translation project, including the project source, the introduction of the writer and the project background. Chapter Two introduces the source text and the translated text. Chapter Three is a description of the translation difficulties and methods, including the preparation work before translating and difficulties met during the translation. Following Peter Newmark’s translation theory of semantic translation and communicative translation, some translation methods have been applied during the process of translating, including amplification, conversion, division, negation and conversion of the voice. Chapter Four is the conclusion, including the experiences from the project, lessons from the project, and limitations of the study and prospects for further study.
