What Matisse pursued was balanced, pure and tranquil arts of painting, free from trouble. So attentively did he work that his beautiful art pursuit was realized in countless paintings. This paper starts with introducing the sense of tranquility and comfort conveyed in Matisse’spaintings, and then compares this sense with visual forms in contemporary design from theperspective of co-construction. The purpose is to seek the similarities, and more importantly, the differences between the two. There are certain psychological deficiencies in visual formsin contemporary design, causing a gap between the design and people’s psychologicaldemand. These all rouse profound reflection on visual forms in contemporary design. In this paper,on the research of Matisse’s painting language, methodology of exampleanalysis and logical argument are adopted. Combining pictures of his artistic works, withPrinciple of Gestalt Psychology, written by Kurt Kafka,as the main basis of visual theories,in-depth analysis on painting language elements such as color, line, composition, etc. areconducted on Matisse’s paintings,so as to seek the relationship between visual forms andexpression of themes. It is concluded from the examples listed that Matisse adjusted balance of the paintings byusing contrast of high-purity colors, and by skillfully involving black and white brightness, with the result of producing strong and stable visual effects;the simple forms and decorativesymbols make a perfect balance in simplicity and complexity, with the result of highlyrhythmic pictures, simple yet rich, charming yet graceful;framework of the paintings adoptedcurved, horizontal and vertical lines as its main form, showing a perfect combination ofstillness and movement. The tone of the paintings is relaxed yet tense, tranquil yet not lonely, dynamic yet with order, which is ultimate realization of his artistic pursuit. On the research of visual forms in contemporary design, methodology of individual caseand synthesis are adopted. Contemporary design is analyzed from the following two levels:superficial material media of visual forms and deep constructional relationship. It can beconcluded from the analysis that in contemporary design, people’s increasing demand in the spiritual level is laid more importance on;visual forms of the design is characterized withco-existence of simplified, natural, magnificent and diversified elements;there existsdifferences between people’s increasing demand in the spiritual level and visual forms incontemporary design. Though belonging to different disciplinary systems,Matisse’s paintinglanguage and visual forms of contemporary design share the same or similar internal structureor idea in the aspects of spirit, concept, form and etc.,which consists of two layers ofmeanings: the first being a kind of internal coincidence, i.e. co-construction withoutinteraction and borrowing, and the second being co-construction with active learning orinfluence from others. Co-construction between Matisse’s painting language and visual formsin contemporary design is based on the fact that contemporary design is not only combinationof art and technology, but also of form and function. In this way, foundation ofco-construction between form and Matisse’s painting language is found. This co-constructionbetween Matisse’s painting language and visual language in contemporary design is reallymulti-level and multi-faceted,with many elements crossing and integrating. The co-construction mentioned in this paper between Matisse’s painting language andvisual forms of contemporary design is a kind of research about co-construction on the basisof deconstruction, which is an inevitable trend in the development of visual forms. The kindof co-construction with full correspondence is often an illusion. Heritage and innovation arethe mainstream in the development of art. The relationship between Matisse’s paintinglanguage and contemporary design is really significant.
