With the unique Bashu culture (the culture in Sichuan (Shu) and Chongqing (Ba))and a large amount of natural landscapes, Sichuan Province appeals to more and moretourists from abroad. Therefore, Chinese to English translation of scenic-spot texts isplaying a vital role in introducing the culture and attracting the visitors. However, there are many errors and problems existing in current Chinese to English translationof Sichuan scenic-spot texts, such as translation of some cultural concepts andlinguistic items, and so on. Some of translations are proportionally unavailable, andlead to overseas friends confuse, which might make them reduce or lose their interestin taking a trip in Sichuan. So Chinese to English translation of Sichuan scenic-spottexts is worthwhile for academic study so that some helpful inspiration can come upfor the improvement of translation of this kind. This thesis aims at studying Chinese to English translation of Sichuanscenic-spot texts from the perspective of Skopos Theory in order to discuss suitablestrategies and techniques. Skopos Theory was proposed by Han J. Vermeer in the1970s at first, which considers the process of translation as a kind of human actionand values the purpose (skopos) of translation in large measure. Based on the study ofSkopos Theory, and typology and contrastive analysis of scenic-spot texts, the authorintends to draw the conclusion as follows. Firstly, the reasonable translation ofscenic-spot texts must comply with three rules of Skopos Theory, namely, skopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule. Skopos rule is the top-ranking rule in Skopos Theory;fidelity rule is subordinate to coherence rule, and coherence rule is subordinate tofidelity rule. In addition, the high quality of translation of scenic-spot texts shouldavoid some problems in current translation to the greatest extent, which includelinguistic problems, cultural problems and pragmatic problems. What·s more, according to the above analysis, two strategies and five main techniques areconcluded, analyzed and discussed in detail in Chinese to English translation ofSichuan scenic-spot texts. Two strategies are domestication and foreignization. Theycan guide our translation of Sichuan scenic-spot texts as the general principle in line with the purpose (skopos) of translation. Five main techniques are amplification, combination, omission, restructuring and transliteration annotation, which shouldcooperate efficiently and effectively in a whole text and make the target text perfect.Owing to the punctilious and intensive research of Skopos Theory, translatorscould make it clear to choose more suitable translation techniques in the futuretranslation practice. There is no denying that it is hoped that with the help of the study, problems discussed in this thesis could be solved in current Chinese to Englishtranslation of Sichuan scenic-spot texts, and the further understanding from thestandpoint of information and culture could have much practical significance on theimprovement of our translation of Sichuan scenic-spot texts.
