An Analysis Of C-E Translation Of Scenic Spot Introduction Under The Skopos Theory

The author firstly does a literature review on tourism translation, including theresearch from the perspective of dynamic equivalence, pragmatics, interculturalcommunication perspectives. Compared with other traditional translation theories,German Functionalism, especially Skopos theory provides useful guidance to tourismtranslation. The thesis then theoretically explores the origin and basic views ofSkopos theory. In the light of Skopos theory, the author finds out principles ofChinese-English tourism translation. Since translation is an inter-cultural andinter-lingual activity, the author analyses features of Chinese and English tourismtranslation respectively. In the following chapters, the thesis goes deeper fromtheoretical exploration to translation practice. On the basis of analysis of Chinese andEnglish tourism translation, the author sums up six tourism translation techniques:amplification and deletion, literal translation and rewriting, transliteration plusannotation, and cultural analogy so as to handle various translation problems. Finally,the author does case studies of Gulangyu Island tourism translation. The authoranalyses many pieces of tourist texts collected directly from Gulangyu Island touristdestinations (most are taken from the local newspaper and guidance books andwebsites), does translation criticism, and gives suggested improvement of sometranslation.According to skopos theory, translators should revise and adjust original textswith specific translation strategy under different translation purpose so as to offset thegap between Chinese and English. Guided by functional theory, the translationstrategy emphasizing free translation and translation effect is recognized as the beststrategy for publicity translation. Compared with the Gulangyu Island’ tourism textsand their translations on official Website, the author noticed that almost all thetranslations reflect functional principles. Through the analysis and comparison, theauthor analyzed the proper C-E tourism translation strategies.
