The present study carired out a systematic, all-sided classification for verb-objectsemantic relations in shi shuo xin yu, a literary sketches of Wei-jin peirod. This studyis under the framework of Light Verbs theory in contemporary linguistics. Verb-objectrelations are classified basing on differences of syntactic structures, the semantics ofverbs and syntactic contexts verb-object phrases presenting are taken consideration.Verb-object relations in the present study are classified into three broad heading andeleven sub-classifications.The present thesis is consisted of seven parts.Introduction part is on brief introduction of author, versions, contents, styles andcontemporary research status of shi shuo xin yu. This part demonstrated the strongoral features of shi shuo xin yu.The first chapter is theoretical framework of the present thesis, the developmentof Light Verbs theory and complexity of verb-object relations are expounded. Inaddition, classification of verb-object relations in shi shuo xin yu under light verbstheory are carired out.The second, third and forth parts are the main body of the present study, in whichthree classes of verb-object relations, Narration relationship, Description relationshipand Illustrative relationship on shi shuo xin yu are analyzed.Narration relationships refer to statementing the movement and dynamic processof events of subject. Relationships between verbs and objects are sub-classified intofive classes: dominance relationships, involvement relationships, experiencerelationships, spacetime relationships and causation relationships. Innovation of thispart is that relationships between encounteirng verbs and following objects. It isdeemed that objects have impacts on verbs and verbs react passively. The secondinnovative point is the dynamic transmission of semantic of imperative verbs from“”ord”er into “causeand light “verb CAUSE” from syntactic level into lexical level isinvestigated and clairfied. This section is the main part and the dififculties of thepresent study.Descirptions relationships means that whole verb-object relationships describestatus of persons or substances in subject places, including dynamic and static descirption. Descirption relationships are classified into three sub-classes: causationrelationships, maintain relationships and vairation relationships. Most verb-objectrelationships between psychological verbs and objects are classified into causationrelationships, which diffeirng from traditional classifications.Illustration relationships include judgment, existential and comparisonrelationships. In these three relationships, action power of verbs are weak, they justli”nk subjects and objects. Objects of these three verbs are called as “relation objects. The fifth chapter is on biref introduction of other verb-object relationships andthe evolution of the ancient and modern verb-object relations. Our point of view is that:verb-object relationships in shi shuo xin yu improved compairng to Qin Dynasty, inwhich objects-fronted phenomena decreased, so did dynamic usage of verbs. Light”verbs had phonological marks, such as “bei(被)”/、111(使),and verbs began to endowgrammatical functions rather than lexical functions. In last part of the conclusion, the problems and the insuiffciency in this study aresumed up,our future research directions is defined.
