Chinese Political Documents concern political affairs and national guidelines. Theyare an important way to understand the government and the people. Since politicaldocuments play an important part in China’s diplomatic affaires,more and more scholarsget involved in the study of how to improve the translation of Chinese political documents.In this way, a thorough study on the translation of Chinese political documents isnecessary and meaningful.Functional equivalence theory is one of the most important translation theories in thetranslation history. The thesis aims at discussing the translation of Chinese politicaldocuments under the guidance of functional equivalence theory in order to come up withsome practical translation methods for the improvement of political documents’translation.There are totally seven chapters in this thesis.In the first chapter, the author makes an introduction to the research from threeaspects: research significance, objectives and the structures of the thesis. In the second chapter, the author gives a thorough literature review on the paststudies on both the translation of Chinese political documents as well as the previousapplications of Nida’s functional equivalence theory.In the third chapter, the author makes a detailed introduction to functionalequivalence theory and analyzes its feasibility in the translation of political documents.The fourth chapter is doing a preparing work for the main part, in which the authorintroduces some difficulties and problems in translating Chinese political documents.What is more, some principles of translating political documents are also put forward toguide the translation practice in the following chapter.The body of the thesis is divided into two parts. One is the equivalent translation onlexical level and the other is the equivalent translation on syntactic and discourse level.Under the guidance of functional equivalence theory, the author provides all possibleways to solve different problems in translating political documents.Finally, the author comes up with the major findings, the limitation of the research aswell some suggestions for further studies.
