Motivation, as one of the most influential learners’ individual differences, isgenerally considered to be a key factor in second language learning by second languageacquisition researchers. Under this background, study on Chinese learners’ motivationhas great significance for learning Chinese as a second language. Based on the relatedresearches at home and abroad as well as the theories of pedagogy, psychologicallinguistics and second language acquisition, the author conducts a comprehensiveinvestigation and analysis on the Thailand students’ motivation of Chinese learning anda comparison of motivations in different learners, by using questionnaires of600samples, statistical analysis with SPSS software, interviews and classroom observations.The research purpose of this study is to find out the motivation status of ThailandChinese learners in the non-target language environment, analyze related motivationfactors, and put forward corresponding suggestions and countermeasures for improvingthe quality of teaching Chinese as a second language.According to the research results, most learners’ motivation for Chinese is clear-cut,but the level is not high. This paper has suggested that learners with characteristics ofethnic group, gender and degree of being educated have different learning motivation.Instrumental motivation, which has less influence on Chinese learning, is the mostnotable learning incentive. Nevertheless, the integrative motivation which has profoundeffect on Chinese learning is becoming recessionary. The affective factors includecurriculum, learning environment, learners and teachers. Furthermore, based on abovefindings, the author proposes specific strategies and methods for stimulating andmaintaining Chinese learning motivation.
