At present, our country is in the period of rapid transition. The constant development ofeconomy makes social mobility expand into a large scale. Many of rural people, followed bytheir school-aged children, go to cities for work. After they go to the urban city, there appearlots of educational issues of migrant workers’ children. National medium and long-termeducational reform and development project summary (2010-2020) also emphasizes thesolution of compulsory education for migrant workers’ children, pays attention to students’characteristics and differences and tries to develop every student’s potential. This studyintends to investigate the current English learning situation of the migrant workers’ children.Both quantitative and qualitative methods are used in this study. Questionnaires andinterview are employed to collect the data and information on learning situation of migrantworkers’ children.150children of migrant workers and206migrant workers took part in thesurvey.6English teachers were interviewed. The student’s questionnaire explored fouraspects of their English learning: the students’ attitudes to English learning, their learninghabits and methods, their English knowledge and skills and their anticipation of Englishteachers and class. Parents’ questionnaires included three parts, which are physical familyconditions; behaviors and attitudes to their children’s English learning. Teachers’ interviewscontained three aspects. They were teachers’ views on migrant children’s English learning;their ways in teaching of migrant children and their assessment of English performance ofmigrant workers’ children.We have the following major findings. Firstly, due to differences in the level ofeducation and English teaching content in the different areas, many children of migrantworkers lack the necessary pre-school education and good learning habits, so their Englishlearning is not satisfactory. Secondly, because of children’s family background and growingexperience, and they are sensitive and vulnerable and they can not absorb what teacher taught,so their performance is getting worse and worse. In addition, as for the situation of familyenvironment, as parents flow frequently and they are busy with their livelihood, they usuallyignore their children’ education and lack the guidance to children’ English learning.From the research findings, we propose that the English teachers should pay more attention to the characteristics of this special group of students----migrant workers’ childrenand take proper measures in the process of teaching. As for the children’s English learning,the parents should give more attention to their children.
