This paper aims to explore the spiritual dimension of Can Xue’s novels fromthe angle of existentialism. This paper divides three chapters except for the forewordand conclusion. It compares hell, purgatory and paradise with the three stages oflife——self enlightenment, self construction and self transcendence. The forewordsums up the status of Can Xue’s novels and illustrates the purpose, the way and thevalue of the writing; Chapter One “Self Enlightenment: Hell of Torture”, it dividesthree parts and starts with peeping at others, aphasia and self-examination. Thischapter elaborates the process of self-discovery in mutual hatred conditions; ChapterTwo “Self Construction: Death Performance in Purgatory”. This chapter also dividesthree parts. Part One completely expounds an absurd situation of people. Part Twomainly discusses death performance in Can Xue’s novels and the intrinsic meaningof it. In front of the life paradox from death to live, Can Xue starts to pay attention toself-effacement, self-denial and self-reconstruction. She intends to create a purespiritual world which can make her alive. Part Three discusses the way to avoidlife and death in the course of self-deception. Chapter Three “Self Transcendence:the Light of Life in Paradise”. This chapter divides into those two parts. Part Onemainly discusses the furious inner conflicts under the influence of desire. Part Twoshows the breakthrough of life and attempt of self-transcendence and makes a hellout of heaven. At last, through the above three chapters discusses, the conclusive partof this paper will find out the significant conclusions of Can Xue’s novel theme.
