With the growth of China’s economy and its international influence, more and moreforeign visitors begin to get interested in Chinese history and culture. However, manysurveys and researches show that the English written texts in scenic areas haven’t beenhelpful enough to foreign visitors as they should have been, even ending up with some badeffects. It attracted numerous researches to solve this problem from different perspectives.It is worth noting that some of these researches have been highly appreciated and wellrecognized.But the writer found that most papers are more of proposals than proofs. Manyresearches centering on English translations of tourism promotion texts in Chinese scenicareas lay great importance to their observations and subjective opinions. Hardly could youfind some researches conducted from both macro and micro aspects. Their researches aregenerally based on German functional theory, starting with the explanation of the functionsthe texts aimed to achieve and then offering some suggestions and comments based ontheir own observations. In contrast to this approach, foreign researchers turn to an oppositeway and get many results and data, which are applicable after putting them into practices.Therefore, this paper chooses to study the English tourism promotion texts first andthen generalize the features of the texts.The idea of the paper comes from a social linguist Graham Dann, who proposed thattourism language is a special kind of communication. The paper is dedicated to the analysisof the major characteristics of English translations of tourism promotion texts in Chinesescenic areas. Based on the text typology proposed by Reiss, the paper made a detailedstudy over collected data by means of textual analysis, and many conclusions werereached.The paper offers help to tourism translators, expands the text typology proposed byReiss, proves the applicability of textual analysis and demonstrates the probability ofconcluding different characteristics of different texts.
