On The Translation Of Epistolary Texts From The Perspective Of Text Typology

Taking the translation of Kurt Vonnegut Letters,a collection of letters by American writer Kurt Vonnegut,as a case study,this thesis explores how to choose proper translation strategies for different epistolary texts under the guidance of text typology.Letters,which have their own form and linguistic characteristics,involve all aspects of social life and reflect different cultures.The book Kurt Vonnegut Letters describes all the aspects of Vonnegut's life over a long time span.With different addressees,the text style of those letters is variable.In order to accurately convey the meaning of the original text and ensure the correct expression of the author's emotional changes,the translator needs to define the source text type and select appropriate translation strategies.Based on textual features and functions,text typology,as put forward by German translation theorist Katharina Reiss,studies translation methods and strategies for various types of texts to guide translation practice.This thesis analyses the development of domestic research about epistolary translation and text typology.Then according to the textual details,the thesis divides all the target texts into informative texts,expressive texts and operative texts,choosing the right strategies and methods in the translation practice.In the translation of informative texts,the translator mainly uses translation strategies such as division and synthesization.In the translation of expressive texts,the translator mainly uses strategies such as annotation and free translation.In the translation of operative texts,the translator uses strategies such as rewriting and amplification to make the expression clear and coherent.This thesis proves the guiding role of text typology in the translation of letters,providing some references for translation of epistolary texts.
