With China’s ever-quickened pace of internationalization, its contact with theoutside world becomes increasingly frequent. To overcome the language barrier posesan inevitable problem. Hence the birth of interpreting activities and the study ofinterpreting accordingly. In the process of communicating with the other party whoselanguage is utterly different from yours, interpreters serve as a bridge, endeavouring,if not to eliminate,at least to narrow the gap between the speakers. As a very specifiedform of communicating, interpreting is supposed to abide by a series of rules guidingthe whole process, among which politeness principle (abbreviated as PP in thefollowing part) plays an undeniably important role. Good command of both the sourceand target language alone can not ensure that the communicating and interpretingactivity is smoothly, fruitfully and even delightfully conducted. If the interpreter failsto have a fortified awareness of applying PP under certain circumstances, chances arethat sound of discord is well likely to occur. Therefore, it is of utmost importance for interpreters to bear in mind certainessential rules guiding the communicating and interpreting process.
