China’s higher education has entered a new period of development, and for vocational colleges this means both advanced development opportunities and of course facing new challenges such as the need for in-depth reform of the teaching system. In English teaching, for example, the prominent issue is the simple fact that oral teaching does not meet the needs of students. The need to reform and improve this problem is urgent; otherwise it will be difficult for the students to meet the increasing demands of language proficiency in a highly competitive society.Vocational English teaching is mainly accomplished in various methods, all of which demonstrate their own individual problems like speaking courses that are unreasonably set and executed, there are far few lessons, poor teaching conditions, oral teaching goal setting and evaluation systems are backwards (especially considering how the course textbooks are typically outdated and plagued with errors, and the material overly simplified), and finally the low quality of the English teachers-some of which don’t even speak or read the language. How can any student facing such obstacles in class finish the course with the skills necessary for real world usage? All of these imperfections much be improved at all levels of Chinese Education, especially at the vocational school level. In order to modify and enhance the level and quality of vocational English, there must be massive teaching reforms in the following aspects:the English curriculum system needs drastic overhaul and better assessment methods, the establishment of set personnel training requirements in full compliance of composed assessment methods, updated speaking teaching approaches, better implemented speaking courses, a purging of outdated and backward materials for up-to-date materials and courseware, and more proficient English speaking teachers who could be mobilized to not only teach better, but create enriched teaching materials.
