As the basic course of the five-year higher vocational education, English is an essential course. Both teachers and students have been spending a great deal of effort on it, but the teaching effect is still unsuccessful. On the basis of many educators’researches in English teaching, the author, as one of the English teachers, presents the problems in the five-year higher vocational English teaching which associate with our real situation and analyze the reasons of these problems. Then, aiming at the problems, the author takes measures in teaching reforms and works on teaching reflections about the reforms. Finally, the author put forward more detailed suggestions in English teaching. There are four parts in this thesis in total. The problems in English teaching are mainly presented in the first part, including the students’poor foundation, poor discipline, bad attitude, no interest in English, psychological immaturity, Internet addiction. While the teachers’ teaching is not serious but just to complete the teaching tasks, little teaching reform effects, heavy correcting homework and so on. The causes of these problems are analyzed in the second part, the teacher resources do not match with students, the teachers lack teaching designs and reforms, the students’psychology don’t adapt to the new college environment, the teaching materials are unsuitable for using, the teaching methods and tools are lag behind, the test methods are single, the learning environment is not good, there are some causes from these students’families and our society, etc. The third part is about how to reform and improve in English teaching, how to strengthen the contact between teachers and students by using network, students are widely collect English learning resources and perform activities before class in order to arouse their interests in learning English. How to use word-formation and remember the new words, to use task-based teaching method to guide students in English writing and hold all kinds of English extracurricular activities. The fourth part is about detailed rethink suggestions in English teaching, the teachers should teach students in accordance of their actual levels, take the students as teaching center, consolidate the students’ learning at any time, use a variety of teaching methods in teaching, use multimedia equipments to improve students’listening comprehension, use multiple evaluation methods and so on.The appendix parts list the English learning resources which come from the students and the author’s teaching reflection in each unit. It’s worth us to explore other teaching problems and potential causes in the five-year higher vocational English teaching.
