With the integration of the world, frequent and in-depth exchanges among countries, increased competition, as well as the development and growth of China's comprehensive national strength, social demands for talent is also changing gradually. The need for foreign language skills is also beginning to show a trend of diversification and specialization. That requires somebody that both gain a high level of foreign language, but also have the appropriate level of professional knowledge. There is no doubt an important role that Higher Vocational colleges should take part in educating and cultivate such talents to the society. Therefore, how to cultivate such talents has become an important task of higher vocational colleges. In 1999, “The College English Teaching Syllabus(Revised Edition)”, made demands of the subject based English(SBE) courses, that SBE teaching not only to improve the reading ability of the students, but also improve the students ability of listening, speaking, reading, writing and translation [1].At present, SBE teaching is not paid much attention to in many vocational colleges, and there are also some problems in SBE teaching.This paper studies the development of SBE teaching, according to literature analysis, takes machinery major of college A as an example, through questionnaire, interview and other methods to explore problems in SBE Teaching of college A, such as the teaching goal is not clear, the teaching mode is conservative, the teaching assessment and evaluation system is not perfect, the teaching material is conservative, the professional English teachers are not perfect enough, the effect of students study is not good, and so on. Countermeasures are based on practical teaching of Dewey's theory, student centered teaching in Rodgers' s idea, and Ausubel's theory of motivation, Explore the improvement measures of professional English Teaching in Vocational colleges, according to such problems of teaching objectives, curriculum, teaching mode, curriculum assessment and evaluation system, teaching materials, teaching staff construction, etc., in order to make a good effect on improving the overall level of professional English teaching in higher vocational colleges, enhancing students' SBE application ability and practice ability, cultivating social needs of both professional knowledge reserves, but also with a strong English application ability of compound talents.
