Learning strategies are very important for foreign language learning and have a direct impact on the learning results of students. But until today no research has been made concerning strategies for learning Chinese idioms. This thesis presents an analysis concerning the definition and classification of learning strategies based on results in linguistic research and language teaching didactics. Furthermore factors will be proposed that could influence language acquisition. In the context of the classification of learning strategies, a questionnaire was used, to establish the strategies foreign students apply for learning idioms.Based on the results of the research, effective learning strategies and further aspects concerning learning strategies will be ascertained. Subsequently the student’s current status of the use of learning strategies will be presented and discussed. I hope my work can contribute to help foreign students to develop effective learning strategies and thereby improve their knowledge of Chinese. Furthermore foreign language teachers can benefit from the results and employ learning strategies wisely to improve their teaching.
