With the development of modern society and the prosperity of dance industry, choreography major has become a crucial component of many colleges and faculties of arts and has cultivated many talents. However, there is a serious problem in the teaching process that teachers have been given too much weight on action and skill teaching. As a result, students focus primarily on mere action and skill and overlook the creation of image in dance work. This problem has led to the phenomenon of assimilation and "skill-only" thinking. Though the research and classification of dance thinking, this thesis explores the definition of action thinking and imaginal thinking and explains their meanings and relations in dance creation. Choreography education should emphasis the cultivation of imaginal thinking and related suggestions are proposed.This thesis is divided into introduction, three chapters and conclusion. The introduction part explains the goal, significance, methods, object and scope of this research. Started from the angle of general psychology, the first chapter outlines the basic definition and classification of dance thinking. Action thinking and imaginal thinking in dance thinking are defined and analyzed. By explaining the requirements, characteristics, meaning, and relations of these two kinds of thinking from the angle of dance creation, the second chapter will further prove the importance of the cultivation of both action thinking and imaginal thinking. Though field research, the third chapter studies the current situation, problems and causes in the teaching process of choreography in a typical art college in Shandong province and proposes improvement suggestions.
