The Taiwan allied prisoner camp was set up during the Second World War by theJapanese forces. The major purpose for this camp was to imprison prisoner of alliedforces who were captured in Pacific Theater, mainly USA and UK forces. Two kinds ofprisoners of war were imprisoned in this area, one was the United States’ militaryprisoner of war who were captureed in the Philippines; the other was allied forcescaptured in Singapore, majority of which were English. Based on a great deal of originalmaterial collected from several Japanese archives, with the help of present domestic andforeign scholarly research achievement, this article attempts to reveal a comprehensivesituation of Taiwan allied armies base camp, such as, management and personnel systemof Japanese army and death number of prisoners, aiming at restoring the historicallyoriginal situation of Taiwan allied armies base camp.The paper is composed of three parts, introduction, main text and reference. Theintroduction concludes the domestic and foreign achievements of Japanese prisonerpolicy research during World War II in recent decades and proposes my own way ofresearch.The main text is divides into5parts.The first part involves the evolution of Japaneseforces prisoner’s policy history during World War II, the management system and thelayout of camps with the help of research achievement made by scholars both at homeand abroad.The second part elaborates the Taiwan allied armies base camp’s tenable situation,establishment goal, population change and the related personnel changes through the fileliterature in detail, especially in allied armies base camp by Taiwan nationality prisonerof war surveillant this special community’s constitution.The third part mainly describes the life of prisoners, the hygienic condition and theservice condition of camp, which were on the basis of the oral materials of prisoners andmajor historical materials. Furthermore, International Committee of the Red Cross’sreport indirectly indicated historically original circumstance of the Taiwan allied armiesbase camp. The fourth part elaborates the camp situation after war and the judgment of warcriminals after Japan’s surrender.The fifth part is conclusion which is the overview of research inTaiwan alliedarmies base camp.The reference part indicates the Chinese and Japanese files, the literatures and theconcerned websites which are cited in this paper.
