Changi pow camp was a Japanese prisoner of war camp for Britain and America allied prisoners of war in the colonies of the straits(now Singapore)at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula during World War Ⅱ.It got its name from its location in Changi at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula.Changi pow camp was established on August 15,1942.The main prisoners of war were British(including the common-wealth and the colonial army),America,Dutch and other countries of prisoners of war captured in the Malay Peninsula after the Japanese invade the Malay Peninsula. The maximum number of prisoners of war in Changi pow camp is over 40000.Changi pow camp is the largest pow camp set up by the Japanese army during the World War Ⅱ in southeast Asia.During the period of detention, the allied prisoners of war of America,Britain and other countries were not not protected by the convention of treatment prisoners of war,and the clothing, food and medical treatment were not fully guaranteed.Instead, under the strict driving of the Japanese army, they engaged in heavy physical labor such as airports and docks, resulting in serious death and injury of prisoners of war.The hard and heavy labor and the inhumane slave-like treatment forced the allied prisoners of war of America,Britain and other countries had to rise up and resist, which also resulted in the "Selarang Square Incident" of prisoners of war rioted. The treatment of prisoners of war is a product of the pursuit of "civilized war" after human beings stepped into civilized society since modern times. The treatment of prisoners of war is also one of the important standards to measure whether a country and army abide by the convention on the treatment of prisoners of war and respect the rules of modern international war. Thus, after the end of World War Ⅱ,in the trial of war criminals of Japan by the international community, the Japanese army mistreated the prisoners of war including the prisoners of war in Changi pow camp, which also fully explained that during World War Ⅱ,the Japanese army obeyed the international law on the surface and set up prisoner of war camps, but actually committed numerous crimes in the name of prisoner of war camp.
