A Possible Subtitle Translation Strategy

Popular science focuses on interpreting science for a general audience andis mainly presented in television documentaries. In the practice of subtitle translationfrom Chinese to English, the translator should consider several elements to optimizethe translation. First, the translator should pay much attention to the constraints oftime and space and make efforts to deduct the subtitle in a proper way. Second, largenumbers of scientific information require its subtitle translation to be correct andconsistent. Third, in order to attract the audience, the translator will also try to makethe translation interesting and easy to understand. In the translation process, the authorfind parallel texts will provide specialized foreign document in line with the targetlanguage and meet the target readers’ expectation on the standards of the subtitle.Based on the study of the subtitle translation project of "Yunnan InternationalAgri-Food Technopark(Qujing)", this paper aims to explore how to enhance the roleof parallel text based on three dimensions: imitation of writing style, deduction ofsubtitle and identifying the scientific terminology.
