| As the Chinese are paying more attention to international sports games, domesticmedia need to translate a large amount of English sports news into Chinese. However, thedifficulties of sports news translation lie in the translation of headlines. Since sports newsheadlines have their unique features, it is not easy for many English native speakers tounderstand, harder still for translators who learn English as a second language. Althoughhuge quantities of research on journalistic English have been carried out, we do lackspecific and systematic research on sports news headline translation. This thesis tries toconduct a comprehensive and systematic study on the E-C translation of sports newsheadlines from the perspective of functionalist translation theory.First, the thesis reviews the previous studies and introduces functionalist translationtheory in detail. Then, it analyzes the features of sports news headlines. Next, the thesismakes a functionalist analysis of sports news headlines. It concludes that sports newsheadlines are primarily an informative text but also with appellative and expressivefunctions, and that the Skopos of their translation is to deliver the essential information tothe target readers and ultimately to attract them to read the whole news. Finally, the thesisputs forward four translation criteria (accuracy, brevity, clarity and vividness) and fivetranslation tactics (transliteration, zero translation, literal translation, backgrounding andrewriting) based on the above-mentioned analyses and lists a detailed translationprocedure.The thesis deviates from the existing mode of providing translation tactics based onthe analysis of features alone and applies functionalist translation theory to the E-Ctranslation of sports news headlines. The author hopes that the thesis can make somecontributions to sports news headline translation. |
