With the development of animation industry in China, the Chinese design of animationderivatives makes considerable progress, and the derivatives’ unprecedented market valuearouses much attention from the artists and the businessmen. It continues to emerge manyclassic cartoon character designs and distinctive product modeling, and at the same time thescope of the derivatives expands from traditional toys, food, games, stationery, clothing,books, audio and video products to collectivization promotion style such as anime cateringand anime theme park, with more kinds and broader ranges.Though the design of animation derivatives in China makes rapid progress, the creationconcept or the representing forms still bear huge gap compared with those of developedcountries. The key reason of the lagging development lies in the lack of comprehensive studyof the uniqueness of the design of animation derivatives. The design of animation productsneeds not only to respect the traditional design style and representing forms, but also tounderstand deeply the uniqueness of the design. As long as the deep understanding of thedesign of animation derivatives is achieved, the designer may fully reconsider the designideas and create animation products that meet market’s requirements and the customers’ needs.This paper starts from the main problem existing in the Chinese animation derivatives, andcombines the integrated factors that influence the animation product design as well as theuniqueness and the creativity of the animation design, in order to explore a sustainablydevelopmental way to adapt to the design of Chinese animation derivatives.This paper was composed of four parts. The first part is mainly about the basic principlesand current situation analysis of the design of animation derivatives, which introduces whatthe design of animation derivatives is, the basic situation of the design of animationderivatives domestically and overseas, and the integrated factors that influence the design ofanimation derivatives. The second part discusses the problems to be solved urgently in thecurrent design of animation, such as the problem of ductility shortage of the design of cartooncharacters. The third part focuses on analysis and study of the uniqueness of animationderivatives’ design. As for the last part, some relevant strategies and suggestion are given interms of how to make Chinese animation derivatives’ design to develop sustainably.
