A Study Of Chinese-English Transference In Interpreting

With the deepening of cultural exchange with the outside world, China is playing anincreasingly important role in the arena of world economy. As a result, people around theworld are eager to learn more about China. The interpreting of Premier Wen Jiabao’s pressconferences which are political in nature requires the highest accuracy possible. This thesisstudies Premier Wen’s press conferences in the light of interpretative theory andinter-lingual transference theory.On the basis of interpretative theory, this thesis explores how to apply the trianglemodel and the equivalence of meaning in interpretative theory to correctly interpret theinformation, including implicit meaning, of the SL. According to interpretative theory, thecore task of interpreter is to analyze meaning and transfer the information of the sourcelanguage (SL) which is also the essence and requirements of inter-lingual transference, i.e.in the process of decoding in inter-lingual transference, the meaning of the SL should betransferred accurately and completely to accomplish successful communicative activities.On this basis, three interpreting obstacles in inter-lingual transference are proposed: theobstacle of words, memory and culture gap. This thesis takes Premier Wen’s newsconference as an example to analyze the methods of inter-lingual transference in the light ofthe triangle model and the equivalence of meaning theory. The former includes threemethods, namely, understanding the information of the texts, deverbalization andre-expression; the latter includes restituting, conversing, omission, adding, and recastingetc.To study inter-lingual transference of Chinese-English (C-E) interpreting frominterpretive theory is just an tentative exploration, which, I hope, will providesenlightenments for future study on inter-lingual transference in interpreting and offerinstructions for the training of interpreters.
