A Translation Project Report Of For Whom The Bell Tolls: A Rational Observation On The US Anti-Terrorism By Dai Xu

This is a translation project report on a political and military article “For Whomthe Bell Tolls: A Rational Observation on the US Anti-Terrorism”, which was anoriginal chapter of “C-shaped Besieged China—Breaking out of Domestic Troubleand Foreign Aggression” written by Dai Xu, a Senior Colonel of Air Force ofPeople’s Liberation Army. Taking the9/11attacks as the beginning, this article revealsthe seemingly rational logic under a series of actions against terrorism taken byAmerica, and deeply analyzes America’s true motive behind its vigorousanti-terrorism actions. It also points out that China is one of the “obstacles” blockingon America’s ways to global empire. The US, obviously is trying its utmost, in thename of anti-terrorism, to establish a global empire guided by American value system.Besides analyzing the background, target and significance of this project, thereport also introduces the author, content and characteristics of the text, as well asmilitary and political jargons, idioms and phrases in Chinese culture. In this report,the translation of the original text is guided by “Skopostheory”, with consideration ofthe characteristics of the article and reading habits of English native speakers. Andamplification, omission, combination, division, conversion as well as the theory of“contrast of English and Chinese” should be applied.
