This is a translation project report for “Details Reveal Culture: Seeking the Soulof the United States” written by Fan Xuede, who gives many details about U.Seducation, law, community life and religion thus offers the reader a bigger picture ofthe culture. Equivalence theory is the theoretical foundation of this paper. Thisconcept was first put forward by E. V. Rieu in1953. Then Roman Jakobson, anAmerican linguist and translation theorist, claimed that equivalence in difference wasa basic issue in different languages and also the main concern of linguistics in hisbook On Linguistic Aspects of Translation. This report intends to explore thetheoretical guidelines for translation of literary texts and can be divided into four parts. The first chapter is the introduction which is concerned with the background, objective and significance of the translation report. It is followed by Chapter Twointroducing the equivalence theory, the characteristics and standards of literary textstranslation. Chapter Three elaborates on problems and questions during the translationand relevant translation approaches with specific examples. Finally, Chapter Fourdraws a conclusion of this translation report, including new ideas, lessons andproblems to be solved.
