This is a project report on the translation of "Chapter I,Periodization and Historiography:The United States Considered as a Developing Country",of The United States as a Developing Country:Studies in U.S.History in the Progressive Era and the 1920s,by Martin J.Sklar.The monograph consists of seven chapters covering a wide array of topics ranging from politics,economics,diplomacy,to culture and history of the United States during the Progressive Era and the 1920s,with its focuses on the problems confronted by the United States as a developing country and the ways they were dealt with.It not only has great significance in field of historical studies,but also may contribute to the development and construction of China.Chapter I of the book discusses the issues of periodization and historiography concerning the period and analyzes the situation of the United States as a developing country.As a historical monograph,the book requires rich background knowledge of history and sociology for proper understanding,and contains many difficult words and complex sentences.In order to overcome these difficulties,the author of this report,on the one hand,tries to enrich background knowledge by reading parallel texts found online;on the other hand,tries to translate in a faithful,expressive and elegant manner by taking advantage of Nida's functional equivalence theory as well as necessary translation skills and strategies,such as,amplification,omission,separation,and semantic amplification.During the translating process,rather than seeking rigid correspondence on the surface level,the author of this report tries to achieve functional equivalence between two languages while making sure that the target text is in accordance with the target language culture.This translation practice has further strengthened the author's conception of translation as a complex and hard task which cannot be accomplished easily.Translators should keep learning,improve professional abilities,and pay attention to the accumulation of background knowledge.
