Mother Carey’s Chickens is a piece of children’s literature. As regards translation theory, the traditional Chinese theory of "faithfulness, expressiveness and elegance" has been adopted. The theory of "faithfulness, expressiveness and elegance" encompasses not only translation criteria but also the intersubjectivity between original author, translator and reader. Therefore, translation of children’s literature can also be accomplished under the traditional Chinese translation theory of "faithfulness, expressiveness and elegance".This thesis is mainly about a case study based on the difficulties and problems encountered in the translation of Mother Carey’s Chickens. Under the guidance of "faithfulness, expressiveness and elegance", the thesis proceeds with the case study on the aspects of phonetics, lexis, syntax and semantics and discourse in order to analyze the functions of these aspects on the expression of cultural connotation, shaping of personalities, fabricating of story and creation of atmosphere. Above all, the target of translation of children’s literature is to present the original work both in form and spirit as much as possible. It also can be concluded that in the translation of children’s literature, the translator should consider the works as a piece of art with its own aesthetic characteristics and fully plays his or her role as a translating artist.
