A Report On The Translation Of The Power Of Self-confidence (Chapter Four)

This report is based on the translation practice of the chapter four of The Power of Self-Confidence, written by Brain Tracy. Self-help books are specially written to stimulate people to progress, to solve life problems such as self-confidence building, interpersonal relationships, values and so on, which has played a very important guiding role to the people who has lived in a modern society with fast pace. The Power of Self–Confidence is Brain Tracy’s another self-help book, is written to tell the readers how to build up confidence, courage and unshakable determination in all fields of life, to teach you how to face the biggest challenges and opportunities in your life, and to make you believe that you have the ability to realize the dream in your heart. Such books appeared in our country with short history and more of them are translations. Therefore, translating this kind of books has very important social and practical significance.There are three chapters in this report.Chapter I is the task description, mainly introduce Brain Tracy, the author of The Power of Self-Confidence, and a brief introduction of The Power of Self-Confidence.Chapter II is the description of translation process, including pre-translation preparation, translation process and proofreading. Pre-translation preparation consists of collecting data of author and work, reading the original text, choice of translation tools, and determination of translation theory. Translation process includes text reading, text analysis and text translation. Proofreading is to correct the errors of grammars and expression in translation.Chapter III is case analysis. From the perspective of theory of Yan Fu’s Faithfulness, Expressiveness and Elegance, the translator analyses the important and difficult point in the process of translation through combining with the translation strategies and specific cases. The specific translation strategies include conversion, amplification, literal translation and free translation, inversion, long and difficult sentences.Finally，it is the conclusion of this translation practice. During this translation practice, the translator found that there were still many deficiencies to improve to the translator, such as expression of the language and the accumulation of culture knowledge. The translator realizes the complexity of translation and understands that a qualified translator should not only have ample and systematic theories, a good bilingual ability of English and Chinese and a great deal of culture knowledge, but also professional translators’ hard work, patience, responsibilities and carefulness.
